The Citadel of Saint-Tropez

The Citadel has been the town’s crowning glory for over 400 years. Defending the most important port between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, it is now one of the only monuments of its magnitude on the Var coastline.

Originally, its slopes formed an “ice sheet” devoid of any vegetation, and hence you could “cannon” enemy vessels which came too close to the walls of the town.

For the ideal conservation of the site and in order to extend the ultimate welcome, the town of Saint-Tropez and the Government restored the citadel. The dungeon, which is undergoing work, is closed to the public.

A museum of Saint-Tropez’ maritime history and a naval museum are being built at the citadel, due to be opened in 2012 and 2013.
