Golfe de Saint-Tropez airport inaugurates new runway and aircraft stands

A fortnight ahead of schedule, the airport was able to reopen to traffic following major renovation work initiated at the end of November 2023. The work includes safety, service quality and environmental protection.

A first in 30 years. On November 15, 2023, the Golfe de Saint-Tropez airport closed its doors to undertake major renovation work on its runway and taxiway. This first month-long phase of the project involved the complete resurfacing of the 20,000m² runway and taxiway, with the aim of minimizing joints between two layers of asphalt, which can weaken the structure.

To achieve this, the solution chosen by Eiffage for the site was to pour the pavement as continuously as possible, thanks to rigorous organization. The result: an operation completed in just two days and a single transverse joint for a safer, stronger and more durable runway.

Aircraft positions for the future

The second phase of the project involved the renovation of the main aircraft parking stands, covering 6,000m². Begun in mid-January, it lasted six weeks and not only refurbished the parking lots, but also prepared them for the future challenges of general aviation: electrification.

“General aviation will be the first to benefit from the technological advances that will enable us to switch from carbon-based energy to decarbonized electricity. Aircraft already exist, and we anticipate that in a few years’ time we’ll be welcoming a growing number of them. This is why it was strategic to include in the renovation of aircraft parking areas a network to power them during their stopovers. It’s our contribution to the adoption of a new generation of aircraft, non-emissive and less noisy”, explains Franck Goldnadel, Chairman of the Board of Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur.
