Documents and formalities

Check your papers before you travel

We advise travelers to check the documents required (national identity card, passport, visa, authorization request, etc.) and formalities for entry and stay in their destination country with the embassy or consulate of that country in France.

Without these documents, you may be refused boarding.

Identity card

A valid identity card is all you need to travel to European Union countries and Switzerland.

Passport

A valid passport is required for all other destinations
Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into or exit from the following countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Mauritius, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Visa

Outside the EU, most countries require a visa in addition to your passport.
Ask your travel agent, airline or consulate in your destination country.

Other formalities

For more information on entry formalities in your country of destination or correspondence, please consult the website of your consulate or the France Diplomatie website.

Minors, please obtain authorization to leave the country

Since January 15, 2017, a minor child living in France who travels abroad alone or unaccompanied by one of his or her parents must have an authorization to leave the country (AST). This is a form drawn up and signed by a parent (or legal guardian). The form must be accompanied by a photocopy of the signing parent’s ID. For more information, visit the government website.
